Jul 12, 2006· okay, i just finished assembling my engine before finding out that I should not use rtv silicone sealant between the flanges of the crankcase I used permatex ultra grey rtv silicone gasket maker it states that is resistant to oils but not recommended for use in parts that are in contact with gasoline So my delima is, should I take the crankcase back apart and get some loctite 518 or some.

The factory originally sealed it with Dow Corning Silastic 732 Multipurpose Silicone RTV Sealant, which didn't appear to hold up very well (especially on the bar oil tank which always left a nice puddle of sticky oil on the floor ), and like most silicone rtv sealants is not gasoline resistant.

Jan 01, 2011· If you have a Toyota dealer near by you can get FIPG get 2 tubes one is black and will seal dry it's good for when you have to pull the water pump back of and the flimsy card board rips but the second is the one for the cases and it's the orange FIPG it's main use is for trans fluid or case halves on diffs either way it's the same sealant as yamabond it doesn't dry solid and it works, don't.
May 15, 2011· I agree with you I've always used Yamaha's case sealant It's always worked for me when joining crank case halfs together so I doubt I'll switch to something else unless I can't get it anymore After all who wants to tear down an engine a second time because of a leak (in the case of a 2 stroke you have no choice but to fix it).
Jul 16, 2004· I called my local Honda mechanic to ask what he thought about the idea of it being the crank seals, and he told me if it was the crank seals on the "wet side" that it would have sucked all the gear oil into the crank case(I just changed my gear oil and it was not quite up to the check bolt, but it was not much lower).
